BREATH (Build Recognition and Awareness to Fight Tuberculosis)

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by a bacterium. The bacterium responsible for TB, called Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), is transmitted by people infected with pulmonary (lung) TB who release Mtb into the air through coughing, sneezing or spitting. Based on WHO report that Indonesia got 1.020.000 cases of TB in 2017. And by the Minister of Health statement that Jember has 3.497 cases, so that Jember occupy the second place of the most cases TB in East Java. And from this, within the International Tuberculosis Day, SCOPH CIMSA UNEJ held a project called BREATH (Build Recognition and Awareness to Fight Tuberculosis).

The project held for three days and it has three kinds of activity, the are Training, Radiobroadcast, and Education and Ground Campaign. Started from Friday, March 22nd, 2019, for the training, Saturday, March 23rd for the radiobroadcast, and last on Wednesday, March 27th for education and ground campaign. We are not alone in this project, because we collaboration with Paru Hospital of Jember.

First, we did the training on Friday, March 22nd, 2019. The training held in the lecture room Medical Faculty of Jember University. This activity discusses Tuberculosis disease and how to educate the citizen about the disease and it is for the member of SCOPH to prepare them for the 3rd project. Not only that, we did simulation (role-play) too. We got the interviewees from Paru Hospital of Jember that is dr. Sigit Kusuma Jati, MM.

Second, we did World Tuberculosis radiobroadcast in K Radio Jember on March 23rd, 2019. We talk about celebration of world tuberculosis day and what the tuberculosis is. We explain what is tuberculosis, how the transmission of the disease, how the prevention, and how the treatment. So that the citizen will increase the awareness of Tuberculosis.

And the last we did Education and Ground Campaign. This final project held in Penitentiary (Lembaga Pemasyarakatan) Class IIA of Jember on March 27th, 2019. We educated the convict with a poster of tuberculosis and also we educated them about clean and healthy lifestyle (PHBS). We gave them pretest before education and posttest after education, and we got a little prize for them. After the education, they can get the blood pressure check and weight check for free by the members of SCOPH and continued screening TB for free with Paru Hospital of Jember.

From this project, we hope that the citizen or everyone can increase their awareness of Tuberculosis disease and their healthy lifestyle.
